The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) extends its best wishes to the 2024 National Senior Certificate (Matric) Class as they prepare to sit for their final examinations starting on Monday, 21 October 2024.
These examinations, the culmination of twelve years of schooling, carry immense pressure. They are often seen as a reflection of the health of our education system, while learners view them as the key to unlocking higher education and future opportunities. Considerable resources have been invested in study camps to prepare learners for this important milestone.
However, SADTU believes that the burden of pressure placed on these exams can be alleviated if the Department of Basic Education allocates equal attention and resources across all grades. A well-functioning system from foundation phase upwards would ensure smoother progress for all learners, including Grade 12s.
This year, 732,448 full-time and 136,195 part-time candidates are registered to write their final exams—an increase of 8,400 candidates compared to 2023. However, we are concerned that out of the 1.1 million learners who began Grade 10 two years ago, only 827,000 will be writing these exams, with close to 200,000 learners from that cohort not taking part.
We commend the tireless efforts of all the teachers who guided these learners through each phase of their educational journey, from foundation to matric, playing a pivotal role in preparing them for this moment. We also acknowledge the hard work and perseverance of the learners themselves.
SADTU takes note of the preparations made by provincial education departments to ensure smooth running of the exams. We urge them to tighten security measures to prevent any exam paper leaks or unprofessional conduct that could undermine the credibility of these exams.
At the same time, we call on learners to avoid engaging in any form of dishonesty, such as cheating, which could compromise their results. We also encourage parents, siblings, teachers, and government officials, in line with the Union’s “I Am a School Fan” campaign, to provide unwavering support to matriculants during this stressful period.
We strongly condemn any community protests or disruptions timed to coincide with the exams, as such actions deprive learners of the opportunity to complete exams that can change their lives for the better.
Lastly, we encourage all students, from every grade, phase, and institution of higher learning, to stay calm and focused during this examination season. Every exam, regardless of the level, is important and significant to the learner’s progress.
