COSATU statement on the outcomes of the national elections in Botswana and Mozambique and the consolidation of democracy in the SADC region

COSATU notes the outcomes in the recently held national elections in Botswana and Mozambique as important components of the consolidation and deepening of democracy in the SADC region.

COSATU remains actively engaged with our sister federations and broader progressive forces in the two neighbouring states regarding the electoral outcomes, recent developments and their implications for workers and the people of the SADC region as a whole.

On Botswana

COSATU joins the international community in congratulating the people of Botswana for successfully holding a peaceful, transparent and credible national elections, basing itself on the constitution of the country, SADC protocols and other international instruments on democracy, good governance and ethical conduct.

COSATU further congratulates the exemplary transfer of power from one administration to the next without violence, tensions or resistance. It reflects the depth of the democratic culture and progress in the development of governance institutions in the country and society as a whole.

The Federation also take pride in congratulating sister trade unionists from Botswana for their active, sustained and engaged participation in deepening and defending the culture of democracy and robust mass participation in national processes. Towards this end, COSATU notes that not less than eight new Members of Parliament are former trade unionists and hope they will effectively use the new platform to advance workers issues and aspirations of the people as a whole.

This is an important lesson we believe the rest of the regional workers involved in struggles to advance working class issues and deepening democracy, would take note of and advance. The struggle of the working class proceeds in all terrains, simultaneously and in a manner that complements mass organised power in the streets.

On Mozambique

COSATU calls for calm, transparency and proper due processes in the Mozambican election outcomes. As COSATU we know too well the pains our Mozambican brothers and sisters have endured due to years of wars and conflict since the defeat of colonialism and apartheid aggression. Towards this end, it is our most sincere expression of hope that the situation will be resolved peacefully, and all parties agree to a fair and credible settlement that puts the country and the people first.

The Federation offers its solidarity to the workers and people of Mozambique, particularly as organised by OTM and CONSILMO, our sister federations and their relentless efforts to deepen democracy, advance peace and stability, as well as promote inclusive development in their country.

On the role of SADC and the trade union movement in deepening democracy and inclusive development in the region

Finally, COSATU reaffirms its call for the accelerated deepening of multiparty democracy in the SADC region and support for countries demonstrating commitment to the values and principles of SADC Protocols. Towards this end, it is our firm belief that the trade union movement in the SADC region and in each individual country, remains an important pillar of the struggle for democracy, justice and inclusive development.
