The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) notes the outcomes of the recently held national elections in Namibia and congratulates the country on electing its first female President.
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is the current Deputy President and the ruling SWAPO party’s candidate. She has been a member of the party since the 1960s and has held several senior roles including as foreign minister.
The Federation welcomes the deepening and consolidation of democracy in our region as an important component in building a democratic, inclusive and growing Southern African Development Community (SADC).
COSATU appreciates the difficulties involved in defending and advancing democracy in each of our countries but welcomes the commitment demonstrated by workers and the people of Namibia in that pursuit.
We reaffirm the importance of gender equality, women leadership and social transformation as key components of a progressive society
Towards this end, COSATU respects the democratic and sovereign will of the people of Namibia and their commitment to building a united democratic, non-racial and non-sexist country for themselves.
It is our firm belief that this will lay a firm foundation for a sustainable and just Namibia.
