Today, as we reflect on our liberation struggles and the enduring legacy of Robben Island, we are reminded of its profound significance as a site of resistance and resilience. Robben Island, with its limestone quarry and isivivane where leaders like President Nelson Mandela left their rocks, symbolises the weight and determination of our fight for freedom.

Our democracy that will soon be 31 years old, is the fruit of their sacrifices.

Let us also honour the women and young people who endured this struggle, like Krotoa, and the traditional leaders who

were banished here,  who stood firm. Their sacrifices remind us that the fight for freedom transcended generations, genders, and roles.

Today, on the birthday of the ANC, serves as a powerful symbol that the struggle continues—not just against oppression but for justice, equality, and the preservation of our heritage. Let us carry forward the lessons and strength of those who came before us, ensuring that their sacrifices were not in vain.
