COSATU GAUTENG CONGRATULATES THE CLASS OF 2024

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) Gauteng Province welcomes the 2024 matric results and congratulates the Gauteng 2024 Grade 12 learners for achieving a remarkable 88.4% pass rate.

This remarkable progress is a testament of hard work, resilience, and commitment displayed by learners, dedicated educators, and the support of families. Their collective effort has not only contributed to this success but has also served as a beacon of hope for future generations of learners in Gauteng. Our gratitude goes to Quantile 1,2 and 3 schools which continue to achieve beyond their resources and circumstances. This is a clear sign that public education is the best and should be harnessed and properly resourced.

This increase in the pass rate underscores the potential that exists within the education system, even amidst the many challenges faced. It is a clear reflection of the determination and perseverance that continues to drive learners in Gauteng to excel despite the hurdles they encounter.

However, while we celebrate this achievement, COSATU Gauteng strongly believes that this success should not only be measured based on pass rates but also by the quality of education provided to all learners.

As we celebrate the matriculants’ success, we urge all stakeholders and government, business, civil society, and labour, to unite in efforts that will create a learning environment that can support even higher levels of achievement in the years to come. Only through sustained efforts and collaboration can we ensure that every learner in Gauteng and across the country has the opportunity to succeed and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of our nation.

The Federation in Gauteng welcomes the assession by Premier Panyaza Lesufi to funnel funds towards the funding for the implementation of the BELA Act. This will go a long way towards inclusive education in Gauteng and across the country. Whilst this is appreciated, we call for the National Government to review the two-tier examinations boards. The is no need for one country to have an examination board run by government and another one run privately. The existence of the Independent Examination Board (IBE) 30 years into democracy is a spit in the face of transformation of education in South Africa.

Together, we can continue to break down barriers and create a brighter, more inclusive future for all learners, fostering a society where education becomes a tool for empowerment, social transformation, and equality. As the 2025 school year starts on 15 January 2025, we call on all stakeholders to work collaboratively towards achieving 100% pass rate in Gauteng.
