The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union in Free State applauds the excellent performance of the matric class of 2024 for achieving a remarkable 91%, which is a significant improvement from 89% of 2023.
The results are a product of the concerted efforts of educators across all Grades over the period of 13 years. We commend all educators, other education workers, officials, parents, and different stakeholders who contributed immensely to achieving this historic performance. The province’s consistent performance over the years demonstrates a cohesive system that has matured over time.
The maturity of a system is reflected in its respect for signed collective agreements and existing policies, which the province has complied with without issues. This includes consistent payment of pay progression, timely allocation to schools and the conclusion of post provisioning norms without reducing posts, among other factors.
We further congratulate four of the five districts in the province for achieving the provincial benchmark of 90%, with Fezile Dabi, under the leadership of Dr Vusimuzi Chuta, being the second-best performing district nationally and leading in the province. This remarkable performance was achieved despite the financial stress under which the province operating.
We acknowledge the foundation laid by the former MEC for Education, Dr Tate Makgwe for which his successors have not disappointed. Under the leadership of MEC, Dr Mamiki Maboya, the performance of the province has improved beyond 90% for the first time and her focus on primary education, culminating in a primary education summit in February 2025, confirms the future looks bright.
As we celebrate with our learners, we are mindful of those who could not perform at the expected level, and our message as SADTU Free State is that they should not despair but rather look at opportunities created by the Department of Education. They should draw wisdom from what Nelson Mandela said: “…… judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”
As SADTU we are looking forward to a remarkably busy year and wish our members and learners all the best of 2025.
