COSATU Eastern Cape congratulates the Class of 2024

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Eastern Cape congratulates the Class of 2024 matriculants for achieving a pass rate of 84.9%.

The province has improved, and its upward trajectory is encouraging and worthy of appreciation. This achievement of 84.9% is the highest on record for the province since the 1994 democratic breakthrough, just as the situation is with the national results. There is a lot of improvement yielded in the Quantile 1 to 3 districts, these are rural districts of the province.

The top performing districts in 2024 were:

·       Chris Hani East – 88.5% (4.5% improvement)

·       Amathole East – 87.8% (5.4% improvement)

·       Alfred Nzo West – 86.9% (2.1% improvement)

·       Nelson Mandela – 86.7% (3.6% improvement)

·       Alfred Nzo East – 85.9% (0.9% improvement)

Commitment, determination and collaborative efforts on the part of teachers, learners, school governing bodies, community-based organisations, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and business community resulted in positive results.

Collaboration and gearing all efforts toward realising the improvement stems from understanding that education is a societal matter.

Support from the Department of Education under the political leadership of the enthusiastic MEC Fundile Gade and the stewardship of the Head of Department contributed meaningfully to this achievement.

The success of the 2024 Class proves that perseverance is the mother of success. It is not the end of the road for those who did not pass, but a little patience, more effort and determination are needed to pass. Education is pivotal to the development of individuals and the nation.

COSATU urges the Department of Higher Education to ensure the effective administration of NSFAS as an enabling factor in the academic inclusion of students from historically disadvantaged communities. In the past, the challenges of NSFAS administration led to the academic exclusion of many deserving students from working class families.
