SAMWU Ekurhuleni Region convened a special Regional Executive Committee (REC) on the 29th January 2025, under the theme “Going back to Basics to achieve progress & action in the interest of Municipal Workers”. The REC took stock after the RSSC to consider key amongst others a concrete programme of action that will respond to the challenges of Municipal workers in General and SAMWU members in particular as follows:Condonation of elected Shopstewards and Office-Bearer’s (LOB’S)
The REC considered and condoned certain elected shopstewards and office-Bearer’s inline with clause 6.4.2 and 7.4.4 of the newly amended SAMWU constitution: 2023 to enable them to fully perform their inherent constitutional responsibilities.Activities and Programmes: 2025
The REC approved a programme of action in the form of activities and programmes as follows:
a. Finalisation of Shopstewards elections
b. Induction of all Shopstewards
c. Case Handling/Management Training of REC and Regional Case Management Members
d. Regionally convened LSSC’s and General Meetings
e. Normal REC and Strategic Planning
f. Regional Collective Bargaining Conference
g. Koena Ramotlou Memorial Lecture
h. Policies’ workshop for all elected shopstewards
i. Employment Equity Advocacy Training
j. Establishment of Regional Resource Centre/Library
k. Membership Recruitment
l. Procurement of T-shirts for SAMWU Members
m. Financial Literacy Training
n. Sexual Harassment and Bullying Workshop
o. Renaming of SAMWU Ekurhuleni Region to Koena Ramotlou Region
p. Secretariat and Campaigns committee meetings
q. Sports and Wellness Programme
r. Gender: Women’s programme
s. Young Workers programmeReconfiguration of Regional Case Management Committee
The Regional Case Management Committee has been reconfigured as part of strengthening its case Handling/Management Capacity as follows:
a. Regional Office-Bearers (ROB’s)
b. Fulltime Shopstewards
c. Local Office-Bearer’s (LOB’s)
d. Regionally deployed comrades
e. Each Local to deploy one additional name to the committeeHuman Resource and Tools of Trade
The REC resolved as follows:
a. The vacant position of an Organiser be filled by the Province
b. A fixed term contract position be created to assist with the Regional Resource Centre/Library and other related admin responsibilities like union branding etc.
c. Tools of Trade for ROB’s and Fulltime Shopstewards be procured to assist with servicing the members in the depots.Conclusion
The REC resolved that as part of going back to basics and rebuilding, union resources should be strictly used for organisational purposes with accountability in constitutional structures. The union Leadership across the levels is encouraged and reminded to be loyal to the union of founding President the late cde Petrus Mashishi.
