The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the North West welcomes the State of the Province Address by Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi.
We note that part of the address by the Premier was an account to part of what the provincial government had committed to during the last State of the Province Address and we welcome such developments.
As the Federation in the province, we are encouraged by the crux of the State of the Province Address. We note the commitments made by the provincial government to the people of the North West province, particularly those from working class communities and rural communities.
In our expectations from the State of the Province Address we, among other expectations, raised the issues of land and programmes aimed at the development of and support to subsistence farmers and we are encouraged by the account and commitment made by the Premeir. The amended Expropriation Act should assist the provincial government to do more in terms of availing land.
We also spoke to the issue of road infrastructure and the collaboration of the provincial government and mining houses in this regard, and we are excited to note that there is a commitment from both the provincial government and mining houses in the province in relation to the building of roads. We call for quality and convenient roads that will be able to withstand torrential rain. Every time it rains, we expect the existing potholes to grow in size and number.
COSATU in the North West notes the commitment by Hoerskool Swartruggens to implement the BELA Act. We call upon other parts of the province to also do as Hoerskool Swartruggens. From our side as the Federation, we want to make it unequivocally clear to the people of the province that we will defend the BELA Act to the core. We will not allow our gains to be reversed.
Notwithstanding the positive and encouraging crux of the State of the Province Address by Premier Mokgosi, we are disappointed by the commitment of the provincial government to create jobs that are not long-lasting and not even paying the minimum wage such as those created through the Expanded Public Works Programme.
To that end, as COSATU in the province we will engage the provincial government on a range of issues but with a particular focus on uplifting the economy of the province and job creation. Our youth deserve more.
Since our government is working as a unit, our expectation is that the budget that will be tabled by the MEC for Provincial Treasury, comrade Kenetswe Mosenogi will put meat to the bones on the commitments made in the State of the Province Address.
