COSATU Call Center Number 010 002 2590

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has recently launched a new call center to provide much-needed assistance to workers facing labour-related challenges. This dedicated resource aims to offer support, information, and guidance to both members of COSATU-affiliated unions and unorganized workers, ensuring that they have a place to turn for help with workplace issues.

COSATU President and General Secretary to march in solidarity with SADTU

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU)’s President, Zingiswa Losi, and General Secretary, Solly Phetoe, will join our Affiliate, the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU)’s march against austerity to several government departments in Tshwane tomorrow, 23 April.

The action is part of SADTU’s ongoing resistance against neo-liberal budget cuts that are negatively impacting upon the education sector and other public services, paving the way to increased privatisation of critical sectors.

COSATU’s vibrant Affiliate, SADTU, will lead the march to National Treasury, and the Departments of Basic Education and Higher Education and Training. The march is aligned to Education International’s global theme, Go Public! Fund Education, and is part of the SADTU’s broader campaign to defend and preserve South Africa’s public education system. SADTU General Secretary Mugwena Maluleke is the current President of Education International, the international umbrella body for educators’ trade unions.

The Federation has consistently called on government to abandon its obsession with austerity budget cuts, particularly now as the Department for Basic Education prepares to implement the provisions of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act including making Grade R compulsory. This will need more, not less teachers, and as such sufficient funding must be allocated to the public education system.

COSATU and SADTU call on parents, communities, civil society and all other progressive forces to join the march in defence of quality, well-funded public education for all.
