The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Limpopo is poised to celebrate the 31st May Day since democracy. This May Day takes place against a background of deindustrialisation, continued job losses, austerity budgets, and neoliberalism and neo-colonialism. It is against this background that this day should be a rallying point for workers and the working class to forge irrepressible unity to confront the challenges that lie ahead.
Despite these challenges, workers have much to celebrate including the National Minimum Wage, SRD grant, Two-pot pension reforms, Compensation of Occupational Injuries and Diseases Amendment Act, Employment Equity Amendment Act, Extension of Security of Tenure Amendment Act, National Health Insurance Act, Expropriation Act, and Basic Education Laws Amendment Act; these are all the gains workers have achieved under the initiative of COSATU.
In Limpopo, May Day will be celebrated at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium starting at 9am. We are calling for workers and the working class to converge at the stadium to celebrate this important day on the calendar of the Federation, and indeed all workers throughout the world.
