COSATU Gauteng welcomes the release of the Gauteng Government ethics report

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Gauteng welcomes the biennial report released by the Gauteng Ethics Advisory Council (GEAC). The Federation applauds the GEAC for being objective and laying bare ethical challenges within the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG). We also hail Premier Panyaza Lesufi and his government for supporting and allowing the Council to do its work unhindered. Premier Lesufi must also receive accolades for sticking to the promise of ethical government and good governance.

Much as we appreciate the report and support the Premier in his commitment towards ethical and good governance, we are disappointed by the 37% members of the Senior Management Services and officials in Supply Chain Management who are reported to be conducting business with organs of the state. This calls for accountability and urgent actions towards remedying this unethical behaviour.

COSATU Gauteng is also concerned by the Premier’s report that the GPG has returned R1.8 billion to the National Treasury amidst service delivery challenges across the province. This is a spit in the face of Gauteng residence who are thirsty for safety and security, effective health services, clean running water and jobs.

COSATU will convene a meeting with the Premier to discuss amongst others the reasons for returning money to National Treasury, steps to be taken to address unethical conduct by those who are reported to be conducting business with the state.
