The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) joins the nation in mourning the passing of Dr Tshenuwani Simon Farisani, a liberation stalwart, theologian, former Member of Parliament, and a profound voice of conscience in our democratic journey.
Dr Farisani’s life was marked by extraordinary courage, moral clarity, and a lifelong commitment to justice and liberation. As a fearless critic of apartheid and a multiple detainee who endured torture and imprisonment, he emerged as a beacon of spiritual resistance and principled leadership. His contribution to the liberation movement extended beyond the political — he gave voice to the ethical and moral imperatives of the struggle.
Dr Farisani held a special place in the hearts of POPCRU members, not only as a respected freedom fighter but as a regular and inspirational voice at POPCRU gatherings. Through his keynote addresses at political education schools, and commemorative events, Dr Farisani consistently challenged and inspired the union to remain grounded in its founding principles of justice, equality, and working-class solidarity.
His ability to connect theology and liberation politics made him a unique moral compass for POPCRU members working within the criminal justice system. He reminded us that the struggle for fair labour practices, ethical policing, and the dignity of correctional workers is deeply tied to the unfinished project of South Africa’s liberation.
In his addresses to POPCRU, Dr Farisani warned against the dangers of complacency, corruption, and betrayal of the working-class mandate. He called for a leadership rooted in service, humility, and revolutionary accountability. His words provided clarity in times of uncertainty and reaffirmed our duty to uphold the democratic and transformational values that underpin the existence of our union.
He uplifted the role of police, correctional, and traffic officials, not as agents of repression, but as public servants essential to justice, safety, and nation-building. His messages helped reframe how workers within the state apparatus see their contribution — not as bureaucratic, but as part of a greater mission to transform society.
Dr Farisani leaves behind a towering legacy of resistance, faith, and unwavering ethical leadership. His role in shaping political consciousness and nurturing moral integrity within the labour movement, particularly POPCRU, will never be forgotten.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, the faith community, and all who were touched by his life of service. As POPCRU, we rededicate ourselves to the values he so passionately stood for.
May his soul rest in revolutionary peace.
