The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] supports the industrial action by our sister union, Communication Workers Union [CWU] at the South African Post Office [SAPO]. 

The industrial action by CWU comes after the union obtained a certificate of non-resolution following a deadlock on salary negotiations. As NEHAWU, we fully support their decision to withdraw their labour in demand of better wages, improved and better working conditions.

Workers at the SAPO have not received any salary increment for more than two [2] years and are still owned monies [back-pay] by the employer from the previous financial years. The employer has not been contributing to the medical aid scheme and the pension fund. The national union supports the genuine demands by workers for better salaries and improved working conditions.

We fully support the union’s demand for a 15% salary increase across the board, medical aid payments, pension fund contribution and other statutory benefits that have never been improved for years. 

Lastly, we call on the management of SAPO to accede to the demands of our sister union. As NEHAWU, we stand in solidarity with CWU and workers at the South African Post Office in their struggle for improved salaries and working conditions.
