Congress Of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Eastern Cape will be joining the workers of the world in observing the International Day for Decent Work. In marking the 07th of October, COSATU highlights the plight of workers that do not enjoy decent work in their respective workplaces. The federation will be marching in Mthatha.
Decent work is one of the most important elements in any workplace. Absence of decent work has demoralising effects to workers and often leads to high absenteeism rate.
In the true spirit of the federation’s founding slogan, “An injury to one is an injury to all”, COSATU and its affiliates are rallying behind SACCAWU in targeting Boxer Superstore, Spars (RNE Holdings) and Shoprite Checkers in Mthatha.
Key demands are:
- Ensure decent working conditions.
- Job security.
- Respect for workers’ rights.
- Stop exploitation and unfair labour practices.
- Address the growing challenges faced by workers.
The programme is as follows:
- 09h00 – Assembly and Briefing at SACCAWU Offices
- 10h00 – 11h00: March towards Boxer Superstore and handing- over of petition.
- 11h00 -12h00: March towards Boxer Sparg (RNE Holdings) and handing- over of petition.
- 12h00 – 13h00: March towards Boxer Shoprite checker and handing- over of petition.
- 13h00: Returning to the Assembly Point (SACCAWU Offices)
COSATU calls upon workers, students, religious sector and communities to join the action to put and end to victimisation of workers by the bosses of these stores.
Down with exploitation of workers, down!
Forward to the struggle for Decent Work. Forward!
