COSATU embraces Madiba’s clarion call on Nelson Mandela International Day

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) joins the nation in rededicating ourselves to heed former President Nelson Mandela’s plea when he delivered a powerful message to the entire world on his 90th birthday in London 18 years ago, Madiba refueled the long-standing call for social justice and the eradication of poverty.

The injustices faced by billions of people all over the world lay bare. The cycle of poverty, disregard for human rights and systemic oppression fester daily domestically, stretching beyond the borders. Within our parameters, inequality remains the major contributor to the painful sufferings and lived experiences of millions of South Africans. The wealthy are immune to the everyday economic struggles endured by many. The working and middle classes battle to survive a stagnant economy, 43.7% unemployment, endemic crime and corruption, rising cost of living and 82% of South African households in debt. There cannot be any comfort in financial circumstances that lead the bulk of the population to borrow money for necessities because meagre salaries run out before the month ends.

Poverty and inequality are rampant across our communities. In that speech, Madiba called upon all of us to take up the call and ensure that all people enjoy complete freedom and emancipation. It is impossible to be free when putting food on the table proves is beyond reach for many working-class families.

He called on the new generation to take the baton and lift the burdens carried by millions. As the world honors the revolutionary’s appeal through grassroots activities, the Federation supports Madiba’s emphasis on the importance of taking upon ourselves to resist the factors that hinder economic freedom.

It is in our hands to oppose poverty. It is in our hands to continue to mobilise for human dignity to be equally spread out for all South Africans to enjoy.
