The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) Gauteng notes the joint law enforcement operation known as Operation Prosper/Karabo, which took place on September 29, in Maphahla village near Fochville. We’ve taken note that 121 suspected illegal miners were arrested and that weapons were seized. We also note that a helicopter incident occurred during this operation and we are thankful for the work Operation Prosper/Karabo has done and we wish injured persons a speedy recovery.
COSATU Gauteng does not have all the facts. We do not want to point fingers, but we do want answers. We call for an open and full investigation to be conducted regarding the incident. We want to know what went wrong, if proper procedures were followed and who might be responsible for this.
COSATU is aware that illegal mining is a serious issue as it affects our communities in a negative way. It brings crime, drugs and violence. It damages our land, our homes not to mention, the theft of our minerals affects our economy.
Whilst we appreciate that the people going underground are trying to provide for their families, but we cannot condone illegal mining that impacts communities around mining areas negatively. We call on the government to conduct a broad investigation that should cover mining conglomerates and the kingpins of zama zamas.
