On April 24, 2025, the COSATU Johannesburg Cluster convened a successful shop steward council to assess readiness for the upcoming May Day celebration.

The council received expressions of support from the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP). These messages underscored the imperative of maintaining collaboration within the alliance and bolstering each other’s efforts through such initiatives.

The Cluster and Provincial leadership of COSATU urged comrades to disseminate the significance of May Day and participate in the program with utmost discipline. During the meeting, comrades were provided with information regarding bus allocations at Gandhi Square and Ivory Park to facilitate access to the rally.

The meeting also witnessed robust discussions between local and affiliate representatives on the inputs provided. A resolution was adopted to lobby for comrades Mike Mongwe and Lyndsay Hughes from the Cluster to be included in the ANC Johannesburg Regional Executive Committee’s upcoming electoral congress, and that all structures and affiliates within Johannesburg are expected to actively promote an campaign for this resolution. The meeting recognised that this resolution will contribute to amplifying the voices of workers within the alliance structures.
