The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) welcomes initiatives by responsible private-sector partners to strengthen public education and improve learning conditions in working-class communities.
COSATU General Secretary, Zingiswa Losi, delivered a message of support at the official handover ceremony of a block of classrooms at the Matolo Khalo Primary School in Limpopo on Thursday. The initiative, sponsored by the Phakwe Group in association with Core Energy, sought to contribute towards a better learning environment for learners.
The COSATU Limpopo Provincial Leadership and the Provincial Leadership of the South African Democratic Teachers Union also attended the ceremony.
COSATU commends the partners involved in the initiative and reaffirms that quality public education is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty, reducing inequality and creating opportunities for future generations.
The Federation, however, maintains that private-sector contributions must complement, not replace, the state’s responsibility to provide accessible, equitable and quality public education for all.
COSATU remains committed to working with government, communities, educators and responsible business partners to strengthen public education and ensure that every child has access to a safe, adequately resourced learning environment.
