The Congress of South African Trade Unions Western Cape has learnt with shock and deep sadness of a workplace accident at the premises of Much Asphalt in Eerste River, Cape Town, which claimed the life of a worker from Power Threads.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, 18 September 2026, after 14H00. According to preliminary reports, the deceased and a fellow employee were changing the tyres of a front-end loader when the loader reportedly fell from the jack and crushed the worker.

COSATU Western Cape extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased during this extremely difficult time.

We call on the relevant authorities and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. Where negligence or criminal conduct is established, those responsible must be held accountable.

COSATU further calls on the employer and relevant companies to take full responsibility for the wellbeing of the deceased worker’s family, including ensuring that any compensation and loss of earnings claims due to the family are addressed without delay.

We will engage with the Department of Employment and Labour and the Compensation Fund to ensure that the circumstances of this tragedy are properly investigated and that all relief and compensation due to the worker and the family are processed as required by law.

Workers sell their labour, not their lives, and they deserve to return home safely to their families every day. COSATU Western Cape reiterates its call for workers to unite and remain vigilant in defending workplace health and safety. No worker should have to lose their life because workplace safety is compromised or because profits are placed before the lives and wellbeing of workers.
