The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in KwaZulu-Natal will embark on an indefinite strike action at Dube Tradeport following a deadlock in wage negotiations for 2024/25 financial year.
The union has obtained a strike certificate through CCMA and the strike action is set to commence on the 24th of April 2024. The employer has since been served with the strike notice. The main point of dispute is the non-implementation of the 13thcheque by the employer which the union has been demanding for the past four years.
It is our view as the union that worker’s demands at Dube Tradeport are reasonable given the plight of the working class in general and the unbearable socio-economic conditions they are exposed to due to the failed neo-liberal economic trajectory that the current administration has embarked on. We are also of the firm view that the employer has the means to address worker’s demands.
In the coming days, we will be mobilising our members from other sectors as well as other progressive formations to join us on the pick lines as we shut down all services at Dupe Tradeport.
As NEHAWU, we remain resolute in defence of our members as they fight for a living wage and better working conditions. We will continue to wage a relentless struggle to protect the interest of workers and defend collective bargaining at all material times.
